Cultural Awakenings Festival
The Cultural Awakenings Festival has been held at the University of Newcastle since 1994 and is a week long festival that celebrates the cultural diversity of our students.
1 to 5 September 2008
There are events each day (starting with a Parade of Nations on Monday to launch the festival) including dancers and musicians, cooking workshops and dance classes and the daily bashing of the piñata, and Friday is the biggest day of all. There are dances and performances and other cultural displays and the huge and fabulous Food Festival. We give your group the funds to cook dishes from your home country and people come from all over campus to taste the world.
We would love you to be part of this.
Get some friends from your home country (if you are new Jason will help you find them) and tell us what you would like to do:
some ideas include country of origin film nights, traditional story telling & cooking classes.
Get a group of your friends together and represent your country with a display or performance during the week or let us taste your national dishes on Food Fair Friday.
But hurry – there are only a few weeks to go.
Unfortunately for the first time in its 14 year history, Cultural Awakenings falls during Ramadan. For those of you observing Ramadan, while you may not be able to taste other cultures you can still learn a great deal about other countries and we hope you can still share your countries with us all.
